What is data interoperability in the Health industry and how does it benefit users?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In recent years there\u2019s been a noticeable increase in coordinated work between health agencies, insurance companies and tech companies in an effort to offer new solutions that adapt to user needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>The Data spotlight<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Achieving data interoperability is vital for exchanging information between different health systems in order to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.multiplica.com\/en\/knowledge\/articles\/patient-centric-health-4-0-to-provide-more-meaningful-experiences-and-engagement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">relevant and simple experiences<\/a> that make patients&#8217; lives easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, this has great benefits. For example:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Data unification<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the past, health systems functioned as an isolated unit, making communication and interaction between the different involved parts difficult. Now, thanks to the use of unique systems, all information has become available to all parties, making\u00a0 relationships between doctors, patients, insurance companies and the industry more efficient.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Increase medical care<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Achieving access and availability of data in real time, patients can follow their treatments from different spaces, improving the quality and continuation of treatments.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Create fit to size treatments<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Counting on a huge quantity of data, therapies (and even medicine) can be created to fit the specific needs of each patient.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Encourage innovation\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The medical industry strengthens its whole chain of value, from production and distribution, to marketing, creating new solutions.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Empower patients\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Patients will now have much more information regarding their medical condition, enabling them to have a greater degree of control over their treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To measure the importance of the digital health market it is noteworthy that it\u2019s projected to reach <\/span><b>500 million USD in 2025 at a global level<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/387867\/value-of-worldwide-digital-health-market-forecast-by-segment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Statista<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. On this same path, it\u2019s anticipated that the technology segment of health information is generating the majority of the revenue, with <\/span><b>280 million USD at the close of 2021<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>The advancement of Data Interoperability<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In recent years, especially in Europe and the United States, different interoperability plans have been developed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Europe, the infrastructure of Digital Services of eHealth\/Digital Health (eHDSI) aims to guarantee the care of European citizens inside all countries of the Union.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This project looks for the exchange of interoperable health information from two transfrontier health services: <\/span><b>ePrescription and eDispensation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, to have access to medicine through an electronic prescription; and clinic history, that contemplates important health information, like medication, disease surgeries, etc. <\/span><b>The eHDSI is aiming to make these services available to 25 EU countries approaching 2025<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Going forwards individually, Spain has worked on data interoperability models since 2003 and has accomplished the development of:\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Health card services, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in which each citizen has an assigned Personal Identification Code unique to the Spanish National Health System (SNS).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Digital clinic history, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">first case of clinical information interoperability at a national level, enabling citizens to consult their information from any part of the health system that forms part of the project.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Electronic prescription, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">thus<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">allowing any prescription to be<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dispensed by any pharmacy in the country with no importance to where it\u2019s been prescribed.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Regarding legal aspects, the country mounts it\u2019s actions inside the initiative of the Action Plan for eHealth in Europe \u201cto develop interoperability systems that encourage networking between organizations, widen the range of accessibility to information and enable the future exchange of information inside the European Union\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the United States, the \u201cCMS interoperability &amp; patient Access Final Rule\u201d, reliant on the Health Department and Human Services, aims to promote patient interoperability and access to their medical information on a federal level. This \u201cfinal rule\u201d is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2020\/05\/01\/2020-05050\/medicare-and-medicaid-programs-patient-protection-and-affordable-care-act-interoperability-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first phase<\/a> of the policies focused on the advancement of interoperability and patient access to health information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argentina.gob.ar\/sites\/default\/files\/registros-medicos-electronicos.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latin America<\/a>, if there is intent to implement unified regional Electronic Medical Record(EMR) projects, the degree of progress is scarce. Some countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Argentina are working on the digitalization of their own health systems \u2014including data interoperability, according to case\u2014 independent from each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>How to promote data interoperability?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There is no miracle antidote, that said the right approach would involve the following three steps:\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>1. Encourage the collaboration of all participants<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doctors, health centers, laboratories, governments and technology companies have to cooperate. Generating debate spaces and idea sharing that propitiates collaboration is fundamental to achieving this.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>2. Adding tech companies to the decision board<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These companies can contribute their knowledge to create end to end solutions that allow the compilation of data and it\u2019s availability for the different participants involved.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>3.
